The American Dental Association and the American Association of Pediatrics both recommend that children see a dentist every 6 months, beginning in their first year of life.
Why keep baby teeth clean? Many parents wonder why cleaning and care of baby teeth is important, since these teeth fall out and are replaced by adult teeth. But the health of baby teeth has significant effects on your child’s overall health, as well as the health of the adult teeth growing under the gum line.
Tooth decay in baby teeth can cause serious issues for adult teeth: it can cause premature tooth loss, which can cause adult teeth to grow in incorrectly. This can lead to decay in adult teeth, as well as other health impacts.
Bacteria causes tooth decay. Drinking and eating – especially sugary foods and drinks – cause bacterial growth on teeth, and without daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits, this bacterium builds up, leading to plaque and tooth decay. Even babies and toddlers should brush their teeth regularly, with help from caregivers!
Visiting your child’s dentist for twice yearly cleanings is important to their oral health: it removes plaque build-up and reduces the risk of tooth decay and cavities, or dental caries.
Our expert team of dental professionals are dedicated and trained in the care and cleaning of small smiles. We make thorough plaque removal easy, quick, and thorough, with no-fear methods that keep kids smiling all through treatment. We use safe, FDA-approved products with kid-approved flavors.
Fluoride treatments are a simple and effective way of boosting your child’s dental health. In addition to brushing regularly with a fluoride-fortified toothpaste, we recommend your toddler or child get a fluoride varnishing on their teeth at each dental visit, to strengthen their dental enamel and reduce the risk of dental caries. Dental varnish treatments have been shown to reduce the incidence of cavities in children by 30-35%, when paired with regular brushing and flossing!
X-rays help your child’s dentist get the whole picture of their teeth: what’s above, and what’s below. You may be surprised to learn that permanent teeth actually start growing in the womb! By the time your child’s baby teeth have come in, the permanent teeth are fully formed, waiting to push the baby teeth out when it’s their turn.
That’s where digital x-rays come in: regular check-ups allow your child’s dentist to monitor the growth and development of their teeth, and the x-rays help show what’s growing beneath the gumline. This helps the dentist notice any signs of decay or improper growth, and check for potential misalignment in permanent teeth growth.
By catching any problems early, the dentist can take precautionary measures, such as sealants, which protect a tooth before a cavity appears. They can also assess the need for early orthodontic care and refer your child to one of our on-site orthodontists through partnership with Diamond Braces. Early intervention promotes healthy growth of permanent teeth and reduces the need for more invasive measures later in life.
Healthy teeth offer lifelong benefits: regular brushing and flossing, with regular visits to the dentist, help keep your child smiling, from their very first baby teeth, to forever!
