When should my child have their first dental cleaning?
The AAPD recommends a first dental visit by age one or when the first tooth appears. Regular professional cleanings typically begin around this time and continue every six months throughout childhood.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
Β A regular prophylactic cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above and just at the gumline. A deep cleaning, or periodontal cleaning, targets plaque and tartar below the gumline and smooths root surfaces. Deep cleaning is recommended only when early gum disease or significant buildup is present.
How long does a pediatric dental cleaning take?
Most routine cleanings for children take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on age and how the visit goes. First-time patients or children who need extra time to feel comfortable may take a little longer β we never rush.
Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?
Yes. We encourage parents to be present, especially for younger children or first-time visits. Our team will let you know the best way to support your child during the appointment.
How can I help my child prepare?
Talk about the visit positively beforehand and keep it matter-of-fact β a cleaning keeps teeth strong and healthy. Avoid language that might introduce fear or frame it as something to get through. Our team is experienced in welcoming anxious first-time patients of all ages.
