Does My Child Have a Dental Emergency?

Kids can experience pain in their teeth, as well as dental injury, as soon as their teeth begin to grow in. Pain while teething is a normal, healthy part of development and is not usually an emergency. Other issues may require emergency dental care. KidCo is equipped to handle a host of dental emergency situations.

Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Teeth

Damage to teeth is a common childhood injury: falling off bikes or out of trees, playing sports, trampolines, and just plain tripping can all lead to a broken or fractured tooth. KidCo can evaluate your child after a broken tooth. Gather as many pieces of the broken tooth as you can find: if the remaining edges are sharp, use dental wax or a cotton ball to cover the edge and protect the lip. Bring your child in right away for evaluation.

Knocked-Out Teeth

More serious injuries can lead to a tooth being entirely knocked from the mouth – this is also called “avulsed teeth.” If this happens – especially with a permanent tooth – it is important to keep the tooth moist. Handle the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root. If it’s soiled or bloody, rinse it under cool running water for 10 seconds. If possible, gently place the tooth back in the socket, but if that’s uncomfortable for your child, you can tuck it in the side of their mouth (only if they are old enough not to choke) or soak in a glass of milk. Stop any bleeding from the socket with cotton gauze or tissues. Come immediately to the office; a properly-moistened tooth can often be reabsorbed with care from an expert dentist.

Dental Pain in Toddlers or Kids

Is your child complaining of pain in their teeth or jaws? There are a wide variety of reasons children’s teeth may hurt: tooth decay can cause pain, as can dental abscesses and worn enamel. Some children may have extra sensitive teeth due to genetics or sensory disorders. You can try treating pain with over-the-counter pain reliever medication such as ibuprofen or advil, or give your child soothing compresses/cool popsicles, but if pain persists, bring them in to address the cause of the issue. We’ll talk to your child about their pain, do a thorough exam, including dental x-rays if necessary, to find the reason their teeth hurt and treat the problem.
